Portage Glacier

We went on a small 1 hr cruise to see Portage Glacier. It was very windy, and sometimes a little cool for andy,( and my ears) but we still had a very good time! it was so beautiful! and it rained last night, and it was overcast all day, except for that glacier tour! the sun came out and gave us a great day. Tom, Michelle and their girls, and my mom, and me and dan and andy, and Don and Warren (they flew home today) were there. and dave and emma of course. my dad couldnt come because he was working, but we almost had everybody. jen and gar went home by the way. but a good time had by all!

such a pretty drive! The mountains in alaska go on for hundreds of miles in every direction! its so amazing. when i drove to fairbanks, the mountains never stopped! and they continued in every direction! i was utterly stunned. i felt inspired just being in the middle of it all!

One hundred years ago the glacier covered the whole lake! a few fun facts about glaciers;
the ice we see is only about 75-100 yrs old , even though the glacier is thousands of years old, it replenishes itself.
also it takes a snowflake TEN years to become glacial ice.
It takes 10 feet of snow to make ONE foot of glacial ice.
little specialized tiny worms live in the glaciers and feed the birds.
even a receding glacier moves forward (it just means its melting as it moves). i think they said 90 percent of the glaciers are receding and 10 percent are growing.
